Jerry Baxter Jr. (Nephew) said that his aunt Ruby had told him
that her great grandfather's surname was Matthews and that he
changed it to Mathes. None of this has been verifid. However,
in the Matthews family line, there is a James Harvey Matthews
born1855 died Aug. 25, 1931. His perants were Thomas Jefferson
Matthews and Anna Baxter.
In Aug.1995, Mirl (Baxter) Haun, asked Ruby about her family
name and at that time Ruby said that her great grandfather was a
Nicholes and he was raised by a Mathes family and took their
name.
