Cyrus Hembree was a very small man with bright eyes and loved to
sing. He was a Famer and a maker of axe handles.
Cyrus and Matilda moved back and forth between Cocke co. TN. and
Haywood Co. NC.
On April 10, 1911 Cyrus and Matilda sold their farm on Groundhog
Creek (Cosby Creek TN) and moved to North Caroline for good.
This deed was recorded Dec. 10 1912 in book 7 page 31 in the
Cocke Co. Register of Deeds in the Cocke Co. Court House
Newport, TN. The sale is also recorded in Haywood Co. NC. The
track of land was sold for $130.00 to his 1st cousin, J.P.
Hembree and was payable $25.00 per year until paid.
Graves of Cyrus and Matilda are located in the lower, front most
corner of the cemetery nearest the approach road to the Red Bank
Cemetery. The cemetery is located on Red Bank Road in the
Saunook area, just south of Waynesville. Take Hwy 23 from
Waynesville, or I-40 to Red Bank Rd., which is on the left side
of Hwy 23. Walker Rd. is on the other side of I-23. Turn onto
Red Bank Rd (black top) and go up hill, across RR tracks and on
to the Red Bank Baptist church, about .03 mile. Park at the
church. The road up to the cemetery is gravel and is directly
across the street from the church. The cemetery is about a 1/4
